Our House and Garden

Once described by John Adams as the "grandest house in Portsmouth".

The Moffatt-Ladd House and Garden Museum is a visit worth taking. It has been meticulously restored and maintained since 1912 by the National Society of Colonial Dames of America-New Hampshire (NSDCA-NH), a women's organization founded in 1891. Delve into the captivating narrative of 5 generations from pre-revolution to today, each chapter woven with resilience, heritage, and evolution. Learn about this colorful family across the years comprised of the Moffatts, the Whipples, and the Ladds that resonate throughout history and through the interpretation of this beautiful home containing many of the family's original artifacts. The purpose of the Moffatt-Ladd House & Garden is to interpret American, New Hampshire, and Portsmouth history through the lives and possessions of the inhabitants of the house, both free and enslaved.
